Studying the IB at Kings International College

The world-class alternative to A Levels

Kings International College is one of a few state schools and a growing number of private schools to offer the world-renowned alternative to A levels, the International Baccalaureate.

We were recently accredited as the 1000th “world school” by the IB Organisation following a visit from Geneva by the Director General of the IBO, George Walker. The college attracts students who are interested in a broad-based and challenging course, which is accepted by universities not only in the UK but also around the world.

Unlike the new AS / A levels, the IB was designed as a single broad and balanced course and allows two years of uninterrupted study since there are no external examinations in the first year. A range of assessment techniques is used, including an extended essay, coursework and final examinations. The wait for results is also reduced, with IB results being issued in July each year. Remember this is a whole four weeks before A level results are available.

Students take six courses, three at higher level, A level standard but with less content, and three at standard level similar to AS level. In addition, students enjoy excellent preparation for university-style work with the Theory of Knowledge course, which considers the role knowledge plays in a global society and integrates well with other IB subject choices. In addition, creativity, action and service provides that special community focus that is such an important aspect of the whole diploma. The College offers and supports a range of options for this, locally, nationally and internationally. This July some of our students are travelling to India to support the work, still under development, in a newly established school. They will be involved in delivering aspects of the curriculum, in sharing very different cultural exchanges and thus providing opportunities for children who would not otherwise have access to formal education.

This cutting edge college offers students fast Internet and computer access, as well as lessons and links with students around the world through video-conferencing. We are proud to be part of the Kingshurst Federation of Schools and have many exciting and on-going links with other members.
