Old Operating Theatre Trip - 30 April 2012
On Monday 30th April, History GCSE students from Year 10 and 11 paid a visit to the Old Operating Theatre, Museum and Herb Garret in London, just across the road from Guy's Hospital. The roof garret of the 18th century church of St Thomas the Apostle contains what remains of Britain's oldest operating theatre. The theatre dates form 1821 and was contained within the attic space (or garret) of the church which was located next door to St. Thomas's Hospital. The theatre closed in 1862 when the hospital moved to Lambeth. The theatre witnessed one of the first (if not the first) use of anaesthesia and Florence Nightingale founded her School of Nursing at the old hospital. The museum not only contains an original operating theatre (with viewing gallery) but a collection of medical instruments from the past 150 years. The museum showed the students how far medical science has improved over since the Victorian era. The highlight of the visit was seeing the theatre in action with one of the museum's staff talking us through a typical operation. This included a look at the methods used to amputate infected limbs as well as the instruments that were used. Both groups thank Nuhash Hussain and Daniel Wake for volunteering to be the patients in the demonstrations.

Big Diamond Jubilee Read Competition
As part of promoting reading and writing in schools, the National Literacy Trust, in partnership with Oxford University Press has launched a reading and writing competition to mark the Queen's 60 year reign. We, at Kings International, want to get our young students excited about reading and will be taking part in this new literacy challenge with all our year 7 students over the next 10 weeks. The students will embark on a voyage around Commonwealth countries as they read their chosen books. They will follow their progress on a classroom wall map by collecting miles when they spend time reading both at home and in College. By reading solidly for 10 minutes, your child will collect 500 miles in a special reading passport and will be rewarded along the route as he/she travels through the countries. On completion of the journey, each student should have collected 33,000 miles (or 11 hours of reading) and will be entered into a prize draw to win some fantastic prizes! If you would like to know more about this competition further information is available on www.literacytrust.org.uk
